We had our first anatomy scan and found out....
We're having a BOY!
Look at his little bits! Or rather, very large bits!
This ultrasound was so fun. We could see all sorts of stuff. The bubs was moving a ton and they checked out his limbs and fingers and toes, made sure his facial bones had fused properly, checked for all his organs. The only thing was that because of the position he was in, they couldn't see his heart very well, so we were told to come back in a month, at 20 weeks.
We even got to see the little guy on the 3D ultrasound machine.
He totally has his father's body here. Tiny little twigs for legs and a substantial mid-section. Hee hee.
Toward the end of this week, I also felt the bubs move for the first time. I couldn't believe it! They say that usually you won't feel anything until around 18 weeks, but I definitely felt the little flutters at the end of the 16th week, which watching TV in the evening. He hasn't stopped moving since!

FINALLY finished with the first trimester and starting to tell more people! I had been eagerly awaiting this milestone for what felt like forever! It's amazing how slow first trimester went even though I stayed so busy. But finally, it's here!
We decided to go away for the long Labor Day weekend to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary! I had never stayed at a bed & breakfast so we found a charming little place around Narragansett/Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
Happy 1 year anniversary pookie!
I was really convinced I had a bump during this trip. I'm serious. But now that I look at the pictures, I realize I just looked a teensy bit rounder, sorta.

I had my NT (nuchal translucency) scan. The fancy kind! Where they check for measurements that may indicate downs syndrome, and take your blood and give you your first ultrasound picture where the bean actually looks like a baby! Here's our sweet little bean at 12 weeks:
And thank God, the nuchal measurement was 1.1, which is low, which is GOOD. Happy!

V and I drove to Ithaca for my work. We'd taken a subcontract project to help get media coverage for the re-opening of the Johnson Museum at Cornell, and neither V nor I had ever been to Ithaca so we made a little mini vacay of it.
At this point, I was feeling good. Most of the tiredness and nausea had subsided, and I was just SURE a bump was forming, so I started wearing looser dresses. I can see now that I was still delusional, but whatevs.

My adorable little niece Eva celebrated her 1st birthday.
We had another ultrasound earlier this week and everything was looking good with the bean, so we decided to tell our parents. We told them that V FINALLY finished our wedding video and that we wanted them to check it out after the party. So even though everyone was really exhausted, they were also really excited to see this video that was a year in the making (supposedly), so both sets of parents came up to my sister's place and we sat them down and played them a video of our OB appointment. V's hoarding the video, so I can't share. :-( Sorry.
But, needless to say, all were overjoyed! Everyone hugged each other and V's mom cried - in a good way! It was an awesome, happy day!

I finally had my first OB appointment. By this point I was 6 weeks and terrified that we wouldn't see a heartbeat. I prayed and prayed that this would be a viable pregnancy, and my prayers were answered.
We saw our little bean for the first time!

This week I also threw up for the first time. Lovely, I know! I'm pretty sure it was because of my new prescription prenatals though. I took a vitamin before starting lunch and 5 minutes into eating udon at my desk, that overwhelming wave came over me and of to the bathroom I went. Blargh!
Over the next couple weeks I got sick maybe 4 or 5 times, all around taking my prenatal vitamin. I tried taking it first thing in the morning, before a meal. Bad idea! While walking Monty I had to duck beside a fire hydrant and wretch. I tried taking it with meals. Even worse! So finally I discovered that if I took it at night right before I went to bed, I could survive without booting.
I spent these weeks pretty much horizontal. Not even sitting on the couch like I normally do, watching TV. I had to be horizontal! As soon as I came home from work, I'd get into my pjs and crawl into bed and just lay there or read one of my many books: Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth, Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method.
One night I felt too nauseous to cook dinner so V decided he'd cook (rare occasion). He made steak and onions and some other stuff but I was DYING. It smelled so horrible and I just wanted to cry. I shut the bedroom door, stuck my nose into a lemon wedge, and prayed for the feeling to go away. My poor husband. He just wanted to do something nice and I couldn't even smell (let alone stomach!) his food. I think that night, like many nights during this time, I ate a piece of fruit and some yogurt.
Ah, the joys of morning sickness!
